Why Video Marketing is so Powerful

Nick Harborne • May 03, 2021

If you’re wondering why video marketing is becoming so popular, just take a look at some of these insane facts.

93% of brands got a new customer because of a video on social media.
Viewers claim they retain 95% of a message when obtained via video.
84% of people say they’ve been convinced to buy a product or service by watching a brand’s video.

Why would you need video marketing?

Video marketing is one of the best ways to portray what your brand stands for. You can incorporate your brand colours, jingles, logos, mission statement and more through video. But why does video do so much better than a magazine ad or a bus stop ad? Because video incorporates both audio and visual, it allows you to show off every aspect of your brand to your consumers, you can choose how you want to frame your story to hit many different senses of your audience.

Video marketing gives you the opportunity to guide people through your brand’s story. But why is it so important to make people understand your brand?

Why video helps strengthen your brand.

The simple rule of a brand is: emotions first, logic second.

You need to be able to connect with your customers’ hearts through marketing messages; because if your customer struggles to decipher what you’re offering, they will take their business elsewhere.

Everyone loves a good story, this is why we grow up asking our parents to read us a story before we go to bed. People love the story of a hero facing adversity, only to have a guide help them on their quest to beat the villain and be victorious. The job as a marketer is to create a scenario where the customer can become the typical hero of a story. Video marketing gives you the power to shape the story for the customer, by guiding them along to become the heroes of their own story. This is where your brand becomes the guide to help them [the hero] to overcome their problems.

Examples of Great Video Ads

Did you know it costs a company over $5 million dollars for a thirty second ad for the SuperBowl! It’s crazy to think that it could cost so much, but actually be worth it. This is because for thirty seconds they can have the full attention of people watching and listening to what their commercial has to offer. The companies can make it as fun and jarring as possible to attract attention that another type of advertisement can’t do.

Think about how every laundry detergent brand talks about how well their product cleans your clothes. It becomes so similar, to the point where you stop caring about brand loyalty and just buy what is on discount, since they all clean your clothes right?

When you want to differentiate your product from other businesses, showcasing your brand through video is a great way to make a statement and be different. In this Tide ad, you get to see the use of their product through anything. From driving a car, to fixing it, to going out with your friends (socially distanced of course), Tide is always there to make sure you get the freshest and cleanest clothes for any event.

You’ve seen every testimonial video out there already, it’s always an employee telling you how much they care about you and what type of protection you’ll get if you sign up with them. What is amazing about this commercial is how unexpected it was able to be.

You were waiting for Aquaman to sell you on why Rocket Mortgage cares about him and why he uses it, but instead it’s just him revealing a super unflattering version of himself. The video helps you understand the comfort you need when you’re at home, but makes it crazy enough for you to enjoy the commercial and remember the brand.

We all remember this one, and if you haven’t seen it before, sorry for making you cry. When you get used to every beer commercial hosting a party at a beach or a club, this completely changes your perception of the brand Budweiser.

By guiding you along the story of a lost puppy, Budweiser was able to make you emotionally glued to their story and watch it all the way to the end, only to find out all those emotions came from a company selling beer. Just like that, they were able to differentiate themselves from every other beer company with one commercial, because they were able to use video to make you emotionally attached to the advertisement.

There’s so much you can do with video, more than a block of text or an audio message. You have the power to create your own story and make it easy for your customers to join that journey with you.

We sat down with our Producer Carrie and Editor Adam to gain a little insight into what it's like for them to work on a project like this, and what goes into making ideas come to life on video. Check out the behind the scenes video too! Carrie: It's really exciting to get project with Pinterest. It's always awesome. When you hear from a prospective client, that's such a recognizable name, it gets us excited. Adam: The challenge wasn't creating a brand or a feel for the video, it was more about illustrating the new tech that they've got, trying to appeal to people that knew how these technologies worked.

Remote to Real Life Story 2020 was the year of changes, whether for temporary safety measures or working towards permanent improvements. Either way, though this year has brought forth so many hurtles to test our adaptiveness in a shifting global epidemic, the same can be said about novel growth opportunities. This is especially true for me. As the newest addition to the Noravera roster of all-star post production editors, I find myself coming out of this pandemic (whenever that may be) with the most unforeseen, yet exciting, step into my career as I could have imagined. Back in May 2020, I was a wide-eyed, fresh film-school graduate itching to get my foot in the post production industry’s door. Freelance work came and went, but I spent most of my free time combing through job pages and production company websites for any open opportunities to find a place, and a team, to grow with. As my search went on, I started looking outside my familiar bubble of Montreal, Quebec, where I had grown up virtually my whole life, and Toronto, Ontario, which I had swiftly packed up and left in March after four years when my university campus closed its doors indefinitely. That’s when I came across this interesting Vancouver production company who was advertising for an editor position. Now, having been told from the beginning of my education that I would have to spend years climbing the latter as an assistant to eventually become a professional “editor”, which is generally true in the Avid-fuelled film and television sector, this just seemed out of my reach. However, I did my due diligence, watched whatever work I could find online and immediately thought to myself “heck yeah, I could add something to this.” And that’s exactly what I wrote in my cover letter that same day.
