We sat down with our Producer Carrie and Editor Adam to gain a little insight into what it's like for them to work on a project like this, and what goes into making ideas come to life on video. Check out the behind the scenes video too! Carrie: It's really exciting to get project with Pinterest. It's always awesome. When you hear from a prospective client, that's such a recognizable name, it gets us excited. Adam: The challenge wasn't creating a brand or a feel for the video, it was more about illustrating the new tech that they've got, trying to appeal to people that knew how these technologies worked.

Remote to Real Life Story 2020 was the year of changes, whether for temporary safety measures or working towards permanent improvements. Either way, though this year has brought forth so many hurtles to test our adaptiveness in a shifting global epidemic, the same can be said about novel growth opportunities. This is especially true for me. As the newest addition to the Noravera roster of all-star post production editors, I find myself coming out of this pandemic (whenever that may be) with the most unforeseen, yet exciting, step into my career as I could have imagined. Back in May 2020, I was a wide-eyed, fresh film-school graduate itching to get my foot in the post production industry’s door. Freelance work came and went, but I spent most of my free time combing through job pages and production company websites for any open opportunities to find a place, and a team, to grow with. As my search went on, I started looking outside my familiar bubble of Montreal, Quebec, where I had grown up virtually my whole life, and Toronto, Ontario, which I had swiftly packed up and left in March after four years when my university campus closed its doors indefinitely. That’s when I came across this interesting Vancouver production company who was advertising for an editor position. Now, having been told from the beginning of my education that I would have to spend years climbing the latter as an assistant to eventually become a professional “editor”, which is generally true in the Avid-fuelled film and television sector, this just seemed out of my reach. However, I did my due diligence, watched whatever work I could find online and immediately thought to myself “heck yeah, I could add something to this.” And that’s exactly what I wrote in my cover letter that same day.

For our shoot, we went up into the beautiful mountains of British Columbia. The plan was to capture small scenes of different groups of people exploring and using the Skout in the mountains, showing the usability of the product and it's easy of use. For this video we wanted to show a fast and adrenaline vibe. The concept was to connect these different groups of people with different lifestyles using mountain bikers to keep that high pace, and tell the story throughout the day; getting the viewers really excited about what they are watching.

Why would you need video marketing? Video marketing is one of the best ways to portray what your brand stands for. You can incorporate your brand colours, jingles, logos, mission statement and more through video. But why does video do so much better than a magazine ad or a bus stop ad? Because video incorporates both audio and visual, it allows you to show off every aspect of your brand to your consumers, you can choose how you want to frame your story to hit many different senses of your audience. Video marketing gives you the opportunity to guide people through your brand’s story. But why is it so important to make people understand your brand? Why video helps strengthen your brand. The simple rule of a brand is: emotions first, logic second. You need to be able to connect with your customers’ hearts through marketing messages; because if your customer struggles to decipher what you’re offering, they will take their business elsewhere. Everyone loves a good story, this is why we grow up asking our parents to read us a story before we go to bed. People love the story of a hero facing adversity, only to have a guide help them on their quest to beat the villain and be victorious. The job as a marketer is to create a scenario where the customer can become the typical hero of a story. Video marketing gives you the power to shape the story for the customer, by guiding them along to become the heroes of their own story. This is where your brand becomes the guide to help them [the hero] to overcome their problems. Examples of Great Video Ads Did you know it costs a company over $5 million dollars for a thirty second ad for the SuperBowl! It’s crazy to think that it could cost so much, but actually be worth it. This is because for thirty seconds they can have the full attention of people watching and listening to what their commercial has to offer. The companies can make it as fun and jarring as possible to attract attention that another type of advertisement can’t do.
Geoff Livingston Ride to Conquer Cancer
By Geoff Livingston 13 Aug, 2020
2018 was a wild one for me to say the least. It included a 4,350km bike ride, a cancer diagnosis and surgery to remove half of my kidney as well as the tumour that could have potentially been fatal if I didn’t get extremely lucky and find it when I did.

It is difficult because it weighs on so many emotions. You have worked so hard to build systems, bought hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment all while trying to build a culture that makes Noravera truly what it is, to then have to rethink the whole thing within a matter of weeks and make decisions that are scary, emotional and ones that you don’t want to make but have to be made. The dance becomes about how to keep the team together and keep as many working as possible, while looking out for the business by maintaining cashflow so there is something to come back to when this is all over. As the entire world is unsure of what the weeks and months look like ahead. It has forced us to make some decisions that were not easy ones. We’ve had to adjust our team, our services and what we do as a business altogether. The large portion of our business has been forced to shut down due to the fact that social isolation means we can’t spend time together as a team or spend time with clients whether it is for planning shoots or actually filming with them.

If you’re an American working in marketing, chances are you’re struggling to create advertising content during the Coronavirus pandemic. Employees across the country are working from their home offices, livingrooms, and kitchen tables while video and photography shoots are shut down across many states. Many agencies and marketers are producing what they can using stock video and motion graphics, but “Happy_Multicultural_Employees_Shaking_Hands_And_Smiling.mp4” clips can only take you so far. More and more American companies are turning to their Canadian neighbours in order to keep marketing efforts going during the Covid pandemic. Yes, American commercial and film productions have already been shooting in Canada for decades in order to keep costs down. Generous government subsidies and a low Canadian dollar mean that Canadian backdrops are often painted as American locations using “movie-magic” to solidify Hollywood North as a go-to filming destination, but in 2020 there are more benefits than just cost savings that make Canada a desirable place to film (although the exchange to CAD doesn’t hurt).
